June is here, and as we slowly re-enter a new world, being able to function in the digital world has never been more important. Whether it is working from home, accessing school, medical resources, or simply staying in touch with family and friends. Our UNPHC EDx YouTube Channel features Shauna Edson, Digital Inclusion Coordinator for Salt Lake Public Libraries.
Digital inclusion is a 3 step process:
Step 1: Access to a computer (preferably not your phone). Here are some links for low-cost/no-cost laptops and desktop computers: www.pcsforpeople.org/
Step 2: Internet Access. Our partners at Comcast offer Internet Essentials; $10 per month hi-speed internet. If you’re a resident, you qualify. Property managers have all the details. This link provides other low-cost internet options: https://broadbandnow.com/
Step 3: Digital Literacy: The basics. Mouse or no mouse? Where is that music coming from? Unmuting that zoom call. the basics can feel clumsy, but- it’s the first step in being savvy around a keyboard. Libraries are a great resource for getting basic digital literacy as well as connecting to resources and programs to support your digital adventure. Go here to find a library near you, and what programs they might offer: https://www.slcpl.org/ As Shauna mentions in the video, the Library has a “Tech League”. There to help those in our community who lack internet access and computers. They will connect you to the equipment and training you need for success in our digital world. https://services.slcpl.org/
